I’ve never been a big fan of the WaPo, not even in their “glory days” post-Watergate, but, as long as you were aware of their slant, they could still provide some actual news. Post-2021, however, with the change in ownership and buoyed by the prospect of coasting on Amazon’s money and energized by Bezo’s openly declared animosity toward Trump, the WaPo gleefully abandoned even the pretense of being a legitimate source of information. It wasn’t just that the news was slanted and cherry-picked, it was made up. These weren’t “points of view” or “differences in interpretation”, this was absolute fiction. “LIES”. And they didn’t care. Anything remotely resembling actual, legitimate journalism disappeared and anyone attempting to provide such soon found themselves on the “outs”, their places taken by radical left ideologues and DEI “box checkers”, churning out semi-literate hack work (the quality of editing definitely took a nose dive, with ungrammatical, awkward writing and misspellings fit for a middle-school remedial English class). It was literally painful attempting to wade through the twaddle the Post was pushing. I don’t envy these “white guys” the job they have. I don’t think there are 4 people of any color, sexuality, or political persuasion who could fix this mess and I cannot imagine the degree of hubris (or mindless optimism) it would take to even attempt to fix this disaster – and it’s certain that if they do manage to salvage this rag, they aren’t going to get any gratitude for having done so, since they’ve already been condemned by all those “wokies” who think the Post’s only problem is that it doesn’t have enough polydactylic, immigrant, non-binary, Islamic dwarves covering “Sports”. The happiest result would be for the WaPo to die in disrepute, an object lesson in what happens when fundamentals are ignored and egoism displaces competence and commitment. Until then, the best I can hope for is that Bezos and the Post continue to hemorrhage money and any credibility either may still possess. The WaPo’s only remaining relevance is as a cautionary tale.
